3D Printing Camp

When we consider the Sri Lankan context, many are not aware about the technology let alone its benefits. Education sector is one of the key players for 3D printing collaborations across many sectors. Therefore, it is important to include 3D printing technology in the Sri Lankan education system and allow young generation to get hands on experience.

With that objective, Thrimana 3D printers joining hands with Mobitel and Ministry of Education organized the first ever “3D Printing Camp in Sri Lanka”. The event was organized in line with the Global 3D printing Day which falls on 3rd of December. The event was held successfully on 4th-6th of December 2017 at Mobitel X-Station, Bambalapitiya.

Purpose of the event

·         Increase the awareness of 3D printing technology and its uses in Education

·         Create a platform for creative young generation to stand up

·         Gain maximum mileage of Mobitel X Station having the first 3D printing zone in Sri Lanka

·         Give an idea on practical applications of programming

Program include a 3D printing competition and lectures conducted by professionals in many industries

Event Highlights

·         Competition for students (Main event)- The challenge was to design a device which can pass a terrain avoiding obstacles, using 3D Designing, 3D Printing, Electronics and Programming Skills

·         Lecture on introduction to electronics by Mr. Jehan Wijesighe- CEO Kidsignite

·         A Session on introduction to CAD Drawing by Mr. Lee Bazalgette from Colombo Design Studio

·         Motivational Session by Chathushka from University of Sri Jayewardenepura

·         Session on Social Robotics by Social Robotics research team under the guidance of Dr. Ravindra De Silva from University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

·         Session on Soft Robotics by Department of Engineering Technology of Open University Sri Lanka

Team Infinity won the challenge. Students from leading schools participated in the camp including Ananda College, Nalanda College, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Anula Vidyalaya, Royal College and D.S. Senanayake College.
